Tom Dixon's Latest in Atlanta

Headed by famed designer Tom Dixon, Design Research Studio is a London based architectural interior design agency that's been making waves in Europe and recently unveiled its first American project Himitsu, a cocktail lounge in Atlanta, Georgia. Fusing American with Japanese culture, Himitsu strikes a particular balance, creating an upscale spot in which to enjoy a tipple.

Inspired by Japanese mixology and the American prohibition era, Himitsu is a speakeasy with a distinctly vibrant side. Replete with luxurious textures and deep, rich colors, the bar emits a sense of exclusive glamour, full of emotion and power. Directly inspired by Todd Murphy's painting 'King of Birds', the design that lives up to its name, which translates to 'secret' in Japanese.

Dixon's Design Research Studio worked to create a raw yet sophisticated interior for this cocktail lounge. Playfully offsetting metallics against more natural materials, the interior retains the original industrial elements that filled the space prior to the renovation. These hints and exposed structural detailing create a sense of age and subtle disrepair that plays perfectly with the richer elements of the design. The highlight is the illuminated copper bar that plays center stage for Himitsu's skillful mixologists and bartenders. This slightly archaic throwback works to showcase the craft and application needed to craft upscale cocktails.
