The Stellar Work of Xavier Lavergne

Xavier Lavergne is a French architect who recently changed paths to open his eponymous studio Xavier Lavergne Ateliers. An incredible natural talent, Lavergne's first furniture collection is a true tour de force and shows just what a fresh, creative talent can achieve. Here we speak to Lavergne about his work and his process.

How did you get into design?
After many years spent working as a French state registered architect (a DLPG) on various projects, I decided to follow a different path. I tried to follow my childhood dream, and I set out to create unique and original pieces of furniture Xavier Lavergne Ateliers was born.

Tell us about your process, how do you create?
I treat my craft like alchemy, designing each piece of furniture through a meticulous process of research and experimentation. I create the materials that are part of my work with the help of a master tinsmith in the Pays de la Loire.

Tell us about Star Dust, your new collection.
Star Dust is my first collection of tables and consoles. The pieces in this collection, which includes table tops, coffee tables, side tables and consoles, are all embellished with organic traces taken from the depths of the earth, and other planets and all are inspired by the galaxy and creation. Copper, bronze, brass, aluminum and Murano glass all glint below the surface of these pieces; blended with tin foam and transparent or colored resin, the pieces are as smooth as marble. Caviar like beads gleam beneath a silvery shimmer, alongside metallic concretions bathed in blue light. I am in love with the interplay of shadow and light through these pieces, which range from dark brown to gold, to pure white.
