UNDER THE SEA

An 'Underwater' Restaurant in China

Designed by SODA Architects, the Blufish French restaurant in the basement of Beijing's APM Shopping Mall in Wangfujing channels the concept of an underwater world. Full of fantasy and whimsy, the interior is replete with tonal blues and pinks made from a colored mesh which falls from the ceiling. The white base forms a jumping off point for engaging blues and pinks, creating an almost coral like interior.

Two distinct dining areas come together, a sense of continuity created by a curved surface which runs through the design. Underneath the high ceiling, four units appear as undersea caves and hold independent dining areas where visitors can relax and enjoy great food.

The warm, inviting interiors feature six types of hand drawn sketches that are reminiscent of underwater corals, aquatic plants, fish and underwater elements. The fairytale like interiors speak of an overarching sense of whimsy and delight.

A metal mesh was laser cut to create aquatic patterns which were then attached to the curved white surface that continues throughout the design. The end result is a series of stunning underwater images, delicate, translucent, suggestive and indistinct, they underscore the overall sense of wonder.
