A New Office Amid a Rich History

In a mere three months, Czech architectural firm Kurz Architekti had to create new offices for their clients Czech Promotion, a leading communications agency. The new office was located in the incredible Karlin Palace, a landmark within the Czech Republic's capital. The lack of time shaped the design itself, as well as the method of collaboration with the client and contractors and soon absolute trust emerged among the various parties. Working at such a speed was risky, but at the same time intensely motivating to all involved. The end result made it all worthwhile.

The first, time consuming step was to strip the building back to its load bearing structures. Once this process was complete the infrastructure was put in place, including the new electricity distribution system, which was exposed from switchboards to plugs. The bare nature of the project enabled electricians to work until the last day and to react flexibly to the surfacing needs.

The design went hand in hand with whatever it was possible to deliver, manufacture and install in a very short period of time. For this reason, contractors and craftsmen were highly involved in the design process, and the team from Kurz adjusted and fine tuned the design following their input. Eventually, everything seen in the reconstructed premises combined the old and functional with the new, smart and, last but not least, it is all Czech.
