Fundraising Through Design in New York

The Kips Bay Decorator Show House is an annual event held in New York to benefit the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. Talented designers are invited to create a unique interior that is open to the public and full of inspirational design. Over 20,000 visitors visit the house during its open season. This year, Sasha Bikoff of Sasha Bikoff Interior Design was among those invited to take part. When Bikoff was first presented with the opportunity to design the staircase in the famed Kips Bay Decorator Show House, she knew it wouldn't be an easy feat, especially because the space itself was a laid out in a challenging manner.

The staircase spirals up the house with narrow landings on each floor, and given the complicated shape, Bikoff wondered how she was going to make this untraditional space a spectacular moment. Most importantly, the designer wanted it to be both aesthetically pleasing to the guests and meaningful to the children of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Bikoff has always been a fan of Memphis Milano and the designer knew that the colors and patterns of this 1980s Miami design movement juxtaposed with the traditional Old World European architecture of the shophouse would work well together.
